Chapter 27

The next morning, Bailey stood up from her gardening as a car rolled into her driveway. She didn’t recognize the car, which made her a bit nervous. After her ordeal the night before with JB West scaring her, she kept Diego close by at all times. He was not normally an aggressive dog, but he was great at sensing danger. She knew he would protect her when it was warranted. She noticed Diego watching the car intently.

Pulling off her gardening gloves, Bailey watched as the car came to a stop. Her eyes grew wide when she saw who was getting out. Dolly and Caroline Winters. Her new sisters. Bailey and Dolly had been getting to know each other a bit, and she was sure they could be great friends one day. Caroline was a whole other story altogether.

Caroline had made no effort to get to know her new sister. In fact, it seemed that she had gone out of her way to deliberately snub Bailey.

“Hi Bailey,” Dolly called from the passenger side of the car.

Bailey waved, as she watched Dolly open the back passenger door. Her son climbed out.

All three walked over to Bailey.

Bailey turned to Caroline first, wanting their meeting to start out on the right foot. “Hi Caroline. I’m glad you came.” Bailey took both of Caroline’s hands in hers and held them for just a moment. It was a gentle, welcoming gesture, and Caroline smiled in response.

“Hi. Thank you,” Caroline told her.

Dolly looked down at her young son. “Honey, say hi to your aunt.”

The boy looked up at Bailey shyly. “Hi.”

“Hi there,” Bailey replied. “I have some fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the house. If it’s all right with your mother, you are welcome to have some.” Dolly nodded when Bailey and Grayson looked at her.

“Yes!”

All three sisters laughed and followed Grayson into the house. He was on a mission to find the kitchen in a hurry. Diego bounded in behind him.

Once all of them had been served some cookies and lemonade on the patio, Dolly spoke first. “So, I’m sure you are wondering what we are all doing here.”

“Well, whatever it is, I’m just glad you are,” Bailey told them honestly.

“Mom, can I go play with Diego?” Grayson interrupted.

“Sure, go. Just stay within sight, okay?” Dolly told him.

“Okaaayyy,” he called as he ran off across the lawn and threw a ball for Diego to chase.

“Let me tell her,” Caroline said to Dolly, and Dolly nodded in agreement.

Caroline turned to Bailey. “Dolly and I had a long talk about you.”

“You did?” Bailey responded.

“Yeah,” Caroline replied, “and I’ll be honest with you. Neither of us are thrilled about our father having an affair and you being the result. But it is what it is. This isn’t your fault, or ours. There’s no reason for us…or me actually, to resent you. You are our sister, and we want to make an effort to really get to know you.”

“What does Charlotte think about all of this?” Bailey asked.

“What my mother thinks is not important,” Caroline told her.
